Like many local and national employers who are experiencing employee shortages, HIRTA is being affected due to lack of qualified CDL bus drivers. Throughout the pandemic, we were able to continue to serve our communities with only a few issues. When ridership was down, we were able to operate with fewer drivers. Ridership continues to increase, however, we don’t have enough drivers on staff, coupled with few applicants to fill open driving positions. This creates a challenge, not only for HIRTA, but also those who depend on our services.
When someone calls in sick, a ripple is felt throughout HIRTA as other drivers and vehicles have to cover for the sick driver. Then, as additional trips are added to existing schedules, travel times can become longer, and pickup and drop-off times may be delayed. Delayed times lead to safety concerns as the driver tries to stay on time, and passengers might become frustrated because they are depending on the bus being on time.
HIRTA has been aggressively working to hire more drivers. However, the competition for those who have CDLs, including truck and school bus driver, is very competitive. Unfortunately, HIRTA is a smaller not-for-profit public transit agency with limited funds, and therefore our hourly wages and limited benefits make the challenge harder.
Being a driver for HIRTA is more than just turning the wheel. Our drivers work where they live and serve their communities. No prior experience is needed to be a driver as you will receive all of the appropriate training. All we ask is that you are a dependable, friendly, safe driver with a good record, and you know the rules of the road.
This job has a flexible schedule. You can work 10, 20 or 30 hours a week. You can work one to five days a week. Prefer only morning or only afternoon shifts? That works, too! We work together to make a schedule that works for both you and us.
We ask the public and our riders for your patience as we do our best to schedule your trip, especially if we need to negotiate a day or time with you.
