HIRTA Celebrates 40 Years of Service!

HIRTA is excited to celebrate 40 years of service! In celebration of this milestone, we have been celebrating with our communities. Each month all year long, we do a contest on our social media accounts. Prizes have been gift cards, an Easter dinner, merchandise, free rides, and more. With more giveaways to come the rest of the year!

In 1981, the Heart of Iowa Regional Transit Agency was formed under an agreement with 7 counties in central Iowa. HIRTA was established to provide public transit services in the counties of Boone, Dallas, Jasper, Madison, Marion, Story and Warren. At that time, HIRTA was setup to contract all transit services to other agencies and only had 2 employees.

In 2011, things began to change and HIRTA started providing transit service in-house in Jasper County. Over the next several years, we began operating services directly in more counties within the region, shaping us into what you recognize today. Last fiscal year, HIRTA provided more than 264,780 rides, 83,714 hours of service and traveled 264,780 miles.

Be on the lookout for future news and giveaways by following us on Facebook and Twitter at @RideHIRTA or by searching for “HIRTA Public Transit”.
