Volunteer Spotlight: Linda Akwa

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am a retired teacher who moved back to this area (where I grew up) in 2021. I volunteer for HIRTA as well has working a part time job for Christian Opportunity Center.

Why do you volunteer?

Over the years, I have learned that I find joy in helping others. When I was working 40+ hours a week, I had neither the time nor energy to provide rides for others. Also, I want to continue to do things that benefit society and my community..

Why did you choose to volunteer with HIRTA Helps?

I wanted to take a part time job, and I considered working for HIRTA. Unfortunately, because I was drawing retirement for teaching, I could not take a county job for several months. It was suggested I volunteer, so I decided to do that.

What has been your favorite part of being a volunteer?

I have enjoyed meeting and helping many different people.

What is your favorite story of a time you helped someone?

Once I had a lady I was driving to two separate appointments. Since we had quite a bit of time between them, we went to the Cracker Barrel and enjoyed lunch together.

What would you say to people who might be on the fence about volunteering through HIRTA Helps?

Oh, please do volunteer. You get to meet people you might not otherwise. You get to help others. You are needed! We all need help some time. I hope when I need assistance, there is something like HIRTA to help me!
