My name is Jess Hack and I’m a recent Creighton University graduate. I live in Omaha and am currently taking a gap year while applying to medical schools. I knew I wanted to participate in some kind of service during this time, and after researching different options I decided to apply to participate in full-time service through AmeriCorps.
I started out working alongside HIRTA as a VISTA associate through AmeriCorps. I matched with HIRTA after filling out an application with AmeriCorps including my skills and interests. I have a background in graphic design, and I wanted to use those skills in a way that would benefit a community in need. The volunteer coordinator recommended HIRTA as a match for my skills and interests — and in hindsight, I completely agree.
I immediately felt welcomed as part of the team by Julia, Brooke, and later Danny, who was hired a few weeks after my start date. In my time as a Summer Associate, I designed a variety of materials, including brochures, social media posts, and press releases.
While I worked with HIRTA, I felt like I truly made an impact. Many of the normal services had been disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and I am grateful to have played a role in informing our riders and their loved ones about modified services and procedures. In my early conversations with Julia and Brooke, I learned that HIRTA is a vital transportation option for many people throughout Iowa. Many individuals depend on HIRTA’s services for reliable transportation to work, medical appointments, and other events.
As the summer comes to a close, I reflect on my experiences working with HIRTA. I feel more knowledgeable about the specific needs of many communities within central Iowa. I learned that not all service has to be hands-on, which is especially relevant in the COVID-19 pandemic. Although my assistance was distant, I feel as though I contributed to the mission of HIRTA — providing safe, reliable access to transportation for central Iowans.
