Volunteer Program

HIRTA's RSVP

HIRTA strives to make a positive impact on our communities. As a part of HIRTA's commitment to creating opportunities for community investment, we welcome volunteers in a variety of roles. We will actively recruit volunteers and match them with people in need. This program closely aligns with HIRTA's mission and vision to promote independent lifestyles for central Iowa residents.

Our Focus

Nutrition

A unique plan will be created based on each person's needs, which may include weekly trips to food pantries, home delivered meals, accessing congregate meal sites, trips to apply for SNAP assistance or more. The person's needs will determine the method of volunteer activity provided.

Transportation

A volunteer driver program will be available for people to ride on a donation basis. Volunteers will provide trips to medical appointments, the pharmacy and grocery shopping using their personal vehicle. The frequency of the transportation needed will be determined on an individual basis.

Companionship

Volunteers will make phone calls and visit with individuals identified as at-risk for social isolation. Individual plans will be established to help reduce the risk of isolation. Volunteers might have weekly lunch with someone, a weekly shopping trip for groceries, or might provide weekly trips to worship.

In addition to the opportunities we offer, we also partner with local agencies to become volunteer stations. To view a list of our volunteer stations, click here. If you are with an agency and would like to become a volunteer station, please reach out to HIRTA's Volunteer Coordinator, Mildred, by clicking here or by filling out the form below.

About RSVP

RSVP, Retired & Senior Volunteer Program, is part of a national network of programs called AmeriCorps Seniors that enlists the volunteer service of adults 55 and older to use their skills, talents, and life experience to help meet community needs through volunteer service.

AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers who serve in the program choose how, where, and when they want to serve, with time commitments ranging from a few hours to 40 hours per week. Volunteers themselves report better overall health and longevity having served their community.

About Our Program

We were awarded a grant to start a RSVP program in Madison and Marion counties. Our goal is to ensure there is a volunteer driver program in our counties. There are some established RSVPs in our counties, and while we don't want to replicate what exists, we want to enhance the programs by bringing consistency of transportation options throughout our region.

If you're interested in volunteering or in need of assistance in Madison or Marion county, apply below. If you'd like information on a different county, reach out to us by clicking here.

HIRTA & RSVP

In Madison and Marion counties, we provide volunteer opportunities and assistance to those in need. See above for the focus for HIRTA Helps.

We have partnered with the existing Boone RSVP to provide transportation for their program.

In Dallas and Warren counties, we have partnered with the United Way of Central Iowa to provide transportation.
